FABRIK - MURMURATION

murmuration /məːməːˈreɪʃ(ə)n/     noun
: a flock of starlings
Ex: The birds gather in magical shape-shifting flocks called murmurations, having migrated in the millions from Russia and Scandinavia to escape winter’s bite. -Macmillan Dictionary

In their single, "Murmuration," Fabrik composes a pumping, hazy soundscape that smoothly shifts to and fro.

The song is aptly named as the atmosphere mimicks the intricate, interwoven flight patterns of birds. It begins with a simple bass line, layering piano and synth before the vocals enter the mix. As soon as I hear the vocals, I'm reminded of Skye Edwards and Beth Gibbons. The instrument lines and vocals weave in and out of one another as the track moves on, finally ending, "you will always be mine..." However, it is not a declarative statement as much as a question mark, signified by the way the music and vocal line trail off into empty space. For anyone who has love for Morcheeba and Portishead, Fabrik is a sonically sweet act to add to your collection.
